Training the public on what to do in an emergency event is especially important to the Weyburn Fire Department, as fire incidents have increased in their area as the population grows. The Weyburn Fire Brigade will utilize their BullEx Fire Safety Trailer to educate school children and the public about fire and extreme weather safety, as well as how to prevent fires and avoid other home hazards, such as sparking electronics and exposure to household chemicals.

Weyburn’s Fire Safety Trailer includes kitchen and bedroom emergency scenarios, as well as a severe weather simulator and a pre-training briefing room. The kitchen emergency training room includes a fully interactive stove with oven and StoveTop fire scenarios, as well as a TrashCan SmartProp, smoking toaster, smoking outlet, chemical cabinet, sparking microwave, and 911 phone.

The bedroom is outfitted with a heated and smoking door, smoking outlet, and a sliding window with an exterior mounted escape ladder for E.D.I.T.H. drills. The interactive industrial briefing room includes a sparking electrical panel with cutoff switch, alarm pull station, and a lock-out tag-out station. The severe weather package uses lights and sound effects to simulate severe weather scenarios including a hurricane, tornado, earthquake, and flood.

The training trailer will make its public debut at the Saskatchewan Oil Show. After that, the trailer will make its rounds to Weyburn schools.

BullEx provided NIST with Digital Fire Panels and Smoke Generators for use in their study. These products were programmed to demonstrate fire progression and produce smoke in accordance with the fire behavior model that NIST designed to create realistic fire and visibility conditions.

BullEx Digital Fire Panels and Smoke Generators were used to simulate both heavy fire and smoke conditions on the fire floor as well as heavy smoke on the floor above the fire. The Smoke Generators were tied to the Fire Panels so that the amount of smoke created and the size of the fire displayed followed the simulated fire model.  When firefighters accomplished the corresponding task, the panels initialized a ramp-down feature and eventually turned off. As with a real fire, when the fire was completely extinguished, visibility conditions on the floor began to improve. BullEx SmartDummy Rescue Manikins were also used to simulate victims in search and rescue operations as part of the study.

BullEx is proud to have helped NIST in the completion of this momentous report. NIST’s study will be used to update the next edition of NFPA 1710, and possibly create a new national standard for minimum high-rise fire crew size.

• Live Fire work includes welding, brazing, metal cutting, metal machining, LP and NG gas piping, and assembly of large metal assemblies.
• Skills/Requirements:
• Experience with general house construction including but not limited to plumbing, framing, and electrical.
• The ability to work from blue prints.
• Valid driver’s license and safe driving record (CDL license is a plus)
• Ability to travel ~5%
• Machine shop experience is a plus
• Electronics assembly including soldering and wire harness assembly is a plus
• Experience with welding / brazing is a plus
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.

The interactive kitchen emergency training room features a fully interactive stove with oven and stovetop fire training scenarios complete with digital flame, smoke, and sound effects. Fires start and grow dynamically and respond to the actions of the training extinguisher operated by the trainee. Fire may spread from the stove to the TrashCan SmartProp if left unchecked. Other props include a smoking toaster, smoking outlet, chemical cabinet, and 9-1-1 phone.

In the bedroom scenario, smoke issues from the “feel for heat” door allowing for interactive hazard recognition and evacuation lessons. Trainees can safely practice evacuation drills through the E.D.I.T.H sliding window with exterior mounted escape ladder. The trailer is also equipped with the severe weather package, which simulates real time hurricane, tornado, flood, and earthquake situations to teach emergency preparedness. Additionally, Madisonville is expanding their training capabilities with a shakeup receiver for hearing-impaired hazard recognition training.

Also present in Madisonville’s Fire Safety Trailer is an interactive sprinkler training room featuring heat activated sprinklers for proper sprinkler demonstration. The room is equipped with a BullEx I.T.S. Xtreme, which can be used for sprinkler demonstration or removed from the trailer for exterior fire extinguisher training.
